Neurontin ("gabapentin")
In January 2005, Siskinds filed a class proceedings against Pfizer Canada Inc. and Pfizer Inc. with respect to Neurontin. Neurontin (generic name is "gabapentin") is a prescription anticonvulsant medication approved for use as a therapeutic antiepileptic agent, specifically as an adjunctive therapy for seizures. The vast majority of Neurontin sales are prescribed for "off label" use and ingestion of Neurontin has been linked to an increased risk of suicidal behaviour.
Siskinds is working with a national class counsel team to ensure the most effective representation possible for the class. The action is being managed by Justice Perell of the Ontario Superior Court of Justice and includes all Canadians who used brand name Neurontin prior to August 5, 2004.
The certification decision allows the claims of class members who used Neurontin and experienced suicidal behaviour to move forward as a class. The decision does not allow the claims of individuals who only used generic gabapentin to proceed.
