Fosamax (alendronate sodium)
On May 28, 2007, Siskinds filed a class proceeding against Merck with respect to the drug Fosamax. Bisphosphonate drugs such as Fosamax are often prescribed to treat or prevent bone loss associated with osteoporosis. Use of Fosamax has been associated with an increased risk of developing serious bone problems such as Osteonecrosis of the jaw (known as "jaw death" or ONJ), asceptic osteoporosis, and stress fractures (specifically the femur).
ONJ is a condition where the bone tissue in the jaw fails to properly heal following minor trauma like a tooth extraction or other types of dental work. This causes the bone to be exposed which can lead to infection and fracture.
Femur (leg/thigh) fractures associated with Fosamax use have been documented with falls from a standing height or less. They tend to be simple fractures with a straight line across the bone. A break-like overhang on one side of the bone is often observed.
